Cybersecurity Ventures foresees that cybercrime losses could amount to $10.8 trillion by 2026. If you compare this in terms of GDP, only the US and China would have bigger economies than cybercrime.
IMF 2026 projections predict the GDP of the U.S. to be almost $32.4 trillion, while China’s will be around $20.9 trillion. Germany’s economy will generate about $5.45 trillion in GDP. So, that gap puts cybercrime well above the total economic output of Germany, Japan, and India combined. But the comparison needs a key warning.
Cybercrime is Becoming an Economic Threat
GDP measures the value of goods and services a country makes in a set time. Cybercrime costs measure harm tied to crime. Cybersecurity Ventures says its estimate covers many forms of harm.
These include stolen money, data loss, lost work time, stolen ideas, fraud and business loss. It also counts the cost of probes, recovery, legal work and harm to a firm’s name.
So, $10.8 trillion is not the amount criminals steal. It is a wider estimate of harm linked to cybercrime. Although this point is significant, the figure illustrates the magnitude of the risk.
Cybersecurity Ventures projected cyber crime cost would reach $10.5 trillion by 2025, while expecting a rise to $12.2 trillion by 2030 in their report. This should be considered a forecast rather than a tally.
How the GDP Check Works
The International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook for April 2026 states that the GDP of the US is $32.4 trillion, which is the highest globally. China is in second place with $20.9 trillion in GDP.
Meanwhile, $10.8 trillion for cybercrime is almost double Germany’s GDP estimates. Japan and India also sit far below that figure in nominal GDP.
Rankings can shift with exchange rates and new IMF data. The main point stays the same: the cost estimate is huge. GDP and cybercrime costs also use different measures. One counts output. The other estimates losses and harm.
So when we say cybercrime is the world’s third-largest economy, it’s really just a way to help us grasp the scale, not an actual ranking.
Fraud is Adding to the Cost
The cyber threat is also changing. Online scams have turned out to be a substantial problem for consumers as well as businesses.
Reports of the World Economic Forum’s 2026 survey show that 73% of respondents have either faced online fraud themselves or someone they know has. Interestingly, 82% of people surveyed in the sub-Saharan region of Africa said they’ve also been scammed online. That was the top rate among the regions it studied.
Fraud can be through phony emails, fake bills, fraud schemes, and any other trick that cajoles people into giving away money or personal information. This shows why cybercrime can hurt more than company networks. It can hit homes, banks, firms and public services.

The forum’s 2026 report says 94% of those surveyed expect AI to drive the most change in cyber defense this year. AI will not create the cybercrime problem. Online crime was here long before today’s AI tools. But cheap automation could help criminals reach more targets.
Why the Number Matters
$10.8 trillion doesn’t mean cybercrime is actually the third-largest economy in the world. It is better seen as an estimate of the yearly harm tied to cybercrime. That harm can hit firms through downtime, repair costs, lost sales and legal bills. It can hit people through fraud and stolen funds.
It can also hit governments when attacks stop key services. The World Economic Forum says cyber risk is now more tied to economic health. Its 2026 outlook points to risks from fraud, AI, supply chains and global tensions.
The risk is global. Developing markets also face major risks as more digital services come online.
A Number Worth Watching
Cybercrime will not become a country. Its costs also cannot be measured like GDP. Still, the comparison makes one point clear. With cybercrime costing $10.8 trillion annually, the amount would be enough to surpass GDP figures of more than half the nations.
Cybersecurity Ventures expects that this will increase to $12.2 trillion a year by 2031. It is also a business risk, a money risk, and a national security concern. As more money, services, and personal data move online, the cost of attacks may be harder to ignore.
